Church promotes serious look at sex
I'm home from church today with a sick kid. I have a great church so I'll miss that but God shows up here too. "Pure Sex" at Discovery Church in New Jersey This is an article about a a church thinking outside the box and inside the Scriptures. The Bible isn't silent on sexuality and the pulpit should be not either. God forbid that our teens grow up in a church and never hear a sermon on sexual ethics. Kudos to Discovery Church. You absolutely must watch the flash intro to this church's sermon series on sexuality. Extremely well done. Just in case you were worried it is safe for work and not even remotely lewd. mysexlifestinks.com "Love, Sex and Marriage Seminar" by Joe Beam Xorey sent me a link that I think I may have blogged previously but here it is again. Joe Beam is a Southern Baptist preacher giving talks about sexuality with some good things to say. The dissonance of seeing this older, nerdy looking guy talking openly about sexuality is a little strange but I think that's part of his gig and what makes him work. Watch the video clip. |

Hey Ultra,
Pretty flashy stuff. Perhaps I missed something, but my wonder is, where in the Common book of Prayer or Lectionary is this found? Or, even you pushed me to be the "old fashioned Baptist" that Momma's Momma insisted all the kids should be, where in the Apostolic Preaching would this be located? Perhaps on Mars Hill?
Ummmm....
Glad to see you still are having time to write, my Brother StevenE. Grace. With that, I am...

I dunno Peter. You know I'm a lousy theologian but my take on the Bible is that God wants a married couple to enjoy each other to the fullest. Isn't that in the Bible?
Ultra,
It is, I suppose, in so many words. Yet, I remain unsure that the focus from Christ's Body should be centered so on such themes.
I passed a van the other day that said on its side:
"xxxchurch.com #1 Christian porn site"
From my perspective--and I realize I'm dated somewhat--shock language such as this for marketing purposes is akin to a "Howard Stern" philosophy of church growth.
I do not mind the old "out of box" adage thinking. Yet, for some reason, this seems out of bounds. That's just my opinon. But I'm stickin' to it :)
Hope you are well. With that, I am...

Peter,
I think your points are well taken. Perhaps shock value is not the best approach and I don't think a huge amount of attention should be placed on preaching such themes when looking at the scope of preaching over a couple of years time.
However, I am gravely concerned for our teens that are living in such a sexually saturated culture and their churches are virtually silent on the matter. Maybe they are hearing something about it in a youth group but I believe they need to hear more than that.
I think that the pulpit needs to be a place that gives our teens and adults a theological framework for making decisions that point them towards purity, wholeness and living out God's intentions for their sexuality. The Bible is not silent on this matter and neither should the church be. Sexual ethics are in the OT law, plastered throughout Proverbs 1-9 and Paul addresses it in 1 Corinthians and elsewhere. We see the results of a failing to live out God's sexual ethics in the lives David, Solomon and others in Scripture.
And I think the unchurched are desiring wholeness for their own lives. Some are really desperate and need God's answers for their lives. Let's get the cure to those are sick with sin.
xxxchurch.com is a Christian site and not really pornograhic. It's a support site for those struggling with it. They are ministering to the porn industry and those affected by it. No doubt they are pushing the envelope but I'm glad someone is at least trying. Maybe we should invite them to a festival. ;) OK. Maybe not.
Hope you are well.
