10 Mistakes I’ve Made (so far) as a Church Planter — Shaun in the City

I love church planting and am attempting to learn all I can about church planting. For those of you who have planted a church or participated in a church plant what are the mistakes you've made and seen made? Your comments would be most appreciated.

Here are a few of mine off the top of my head:

1. I planted a church in a city that I had no connection to, affinity for, or relationship with. Granted, I was not the lead planter on this project, but it was still a dumb idea.

2. I went into serious debt to attend seminary. Seminary was great, but the debt made it hard to live on an early church planter's salary. To be fair, I thought I was going into seminary to avoid church planting (or even pastoring), but that didn't work out according to my plan.

3. We spent some serious cash on marketing stuff that proved to be useless in our context. Direct mail and radio ads, specifically. I know conventional wisdom still calls for big marketing expenditures, but I think it's better to come up with cheap, unique methods on your own. You'll need the money for something else, trust me!

#1 was the big one.
