Atonement. At - one - ment. Being made one. Amends or reparation made for an injury or wrong; expiation. Within the Christian church and the Bible we have lots of metaphors for atonement. A common one that seems to be out of vogue, and for some reason some call unbiblical these days is the penal substitutionary atonement. An Old Testament image is that of the scape goat. God bless those folks over at the Emergent Village as they have held a contest to come up with new metaphors. On Good Friday they named the winners.
